It’s almost Black Friday, and we all know what that means. These days, with specials and deals beginning on Thursday evening, dedicated Black Friday shoppers will be on a mission as soon as they finish their Thanksgiving pumpkin pie. Whether shoppers are buying gifts for loved ones, appliances for a new apartment, or the latest tech gadgets, the incoming swarm of eager buyers means that retail shops across America must put all hands-on deck for a successful Black Friday. For retailers, the pressure is on!

Therefore, in honor of the 2018 Black Friday and what seems like an ever-expanding holiday shopping season, we’ve compiled our very first “Retail Survival Guide.” However, our guide is not for the shoppers, but the retail employees, managers, and store leaders.   • Training, Training, Training: Prepare your team! Make sure they know their schedule, all product specials, promotions, etc. Build their confidence with knowledge. When the masses of eager shoppers begin to flood through the doors, this confidence and expertise will come in handy. Pro tip: Make it fun! Help your employees prepare in a fun, memorable way. Quiz them on the specials and promotions with a game of bingo or trivia!
  • Nourish your People: Feed your team and keep them hydrated. Nourishment, refreshments, and treats will go a long way on a hectic day. Take care of your team and they will take care of your customers. Pro tip: Organize a team potluck to keep the break room stocked with goodies!
  • Teach by Example: Get on the floor and show them how it’s done! You can inspire, coach, and motivate your team by rolling up your sleeves and jumping into the fray. Show them what a great customer experience should be. Joining your team on the battlefield- or should we say shopping lines- raises moral and energy on a tiring day.
  • Make it Fun: Many employees await Black Friday with anxious reluctance. Others just want to get it over with. But it doesn’t have to be that way! Holiday music, store managers dressing up, and motivational contests are just a few examples to liven up the mood and foster excitement. A little creativity can go a long way to inspire your team to hold their heads up high and deliver the best experience they can.
  • Appreciate your Team: It’s not what you say but what you do that will inspire your team. Your store will get plenty of traffic and sales, so make it a great experience for your employees as well as your customers. Recognize and focus on them as people first and employees second. Pro tip: Make Black Friday a contest! Create categories and award prizes to best dressed, most sales, best customer service, etc… Make sure to create enough categories so everybody feels like a winner!
